Civil servants' strike
DUO employees go on strike for higher wages
Civil servants will not receive a pay rise for the time being and will have to absorb the impact of inflation. This was one of the ways the previous government sought to cut government costs. Now, civil servants are going on strike to protest the decision. They are crossing their arms as of today.
DUO is participating in the strike, so the service will be less accessible. "There are people answering the phones, as always," a spokesperson says. "Callers just may have to wait longer than usual."
"Striking is a right," says the spokesperson. "It's good that that right exists. Civil servants have been put on a pay freeze, and the FNV trade union has an opinion about that. Some people are now responding to the call to strike."
Solidarity
The National Student Union has declared its solidarity with "all striking civil servants at DUO, the Ministry of Education, and other government educational institutions," its chair, Maaike Krom, writes in a press release. "Good education is not possible without the services they provide."
The civil servants will not stop at one day of striking. FNV and other trade unions also want to hold a large demonstration in The Hague on 14 April. The arrival of the new cabinet has changed little in the pay freeze.
