The voter turnout for the University Council elections varies from year to year. On average, one in five students votes for the University Council, helping to elect the students who will meet with the university administration every two months. In 2022, turnout fell to a low of 11 per cent, but it rose again afterwards. Last year, when both students and staff were eligible to vote, student turnout was 23.6 per cent. Due to the steady increase in voter turnout, some hoped that 2026 would break the 2018 record of 26.8 per cent.

To match or break that, a great many students still need to cast their votes today. We will learn on Thursday whether this will happen.

This year, students have plenty of choice. There are six student parties in the running to secure at least one of the twelve seats on the University Council. Voters who still don't know who to vote for can use the Vote Compass created by the University Council to find out which party aligns most closely with their views.

Students can also vote for the student representatives on the faculty councils. On Tuesday evening, Veterinary Medicine took the lead from Humanities as the faculty with the highest percentage of student votes. Veterinary Medicine students are loyal voters every year.

On Tuesday evening, the students of Medical Sciences were languishing at the bottom of the table. They have taken over the red lantern from the students of the Faculty of Law, Economics & Governance.

Students can vote until 11.59 pm today. Wondering what these councils do and why you should vote? Click here to know the answer.
