Sportsperson of the year
Orca rower Lisanne van der Lelij crowned Utrecht's best athlete
Lisanne van der Lelij, who studied History in Utrecht, won the world title with the women's eight in China last summer. She also won bronze with the quadruple sculls at the European Championships in Bulgaria and got first place with the women's eight at the Henley Royal Regatta, one of the oldest rowing competitions in the world.
Utrecht rowing fans had plenty to choose from this time. Triton rowers Eli Brouwer (a UU Life Sciences alumnus) and Pieter van Veen (a UU Law graduate) were also nominated. They were part of the Dutch men's eight that became world champions for the first time in China.
In addition to the rowers, the contenders included Mischa Bredewold, a cyclist and Biomedical Sciences student at UU, and Josine Koning, a hockey goalkeeper and law alumnus from UU.
The award for the best sports team from Utrecht went to Kampong's cricketers. They became national champions last year with the UU medical student Pierre Jacob in their ranks.
The winner of the sports award is determined by an online vote and a jury decision. Both count for half of the total score.
