For 650 million euros
UK rejoins Erasmus+
The United Kingdom announced its desire to rejoin the Erasmus+ programme last spring, after withdrawing from it in 2017 due to Brexit. The details still had to be negotiated at that point.
It has now been agreed that the British can rejoin the programme for approximately 650 million euros. The agreements are valid for one year; after that, they will need to renegotiate the terms. The current amount is almost double what the UK used to pay before Brexit, writes the Dutch newspaper NRC. However, the British government emphasises that it has received a 30 per cent discount.
The Erasmus+ programme provides grants for students and staff to spend six months or a year on an exchange in another European country. Some countries outside Europe also participate. In 2023, over 42,000 people from the Netherlands took part in the programme.
