Some classes may be given online
UU cancels all lectures and exams on campus this Tuesday
The snowy weather has disrupted public transport in the Netherlands, prompting Utrecht University to adjust its teaching schedule for the second day in a row. No exams or classes will be held on the university's three campuses. Students are advised to check Brightspace to verify whether their lecturers have decided to give classes online today. The university's employees may work from home if their managers approve.
The snow and slippery conditions have once again disrupted Dutch roads and railways. On Monday evening, after learning that buses in Utrecht would not run until at least 10:00 am the next day, Utrecht University decided to adjust its teaching schedule for the second time. At that point, the university didn't yet know that all NS trains would also be cancelled until 10 am due to the weather and an IT malfunction.
Daily update before 10 pm
The university expects snow and slippery conditions to continue affecting public transport for the rest of the week. The Executive Board has therefore decided to publish an update online every evening before 10 pm, informing students and staff whether they should come to the university the next day and if classes and exams will go ahead as planned.
On the Intranet, the update will be posted under the News tab. As for the UU website and the student website, the update will be published under the News & Agenda tab.
Code Yellow
Yesterday, UU announced that all lectures and exams will be cancelled if the Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issues a Code Orange for the province of Utrecht this week. The KNMI has since changed the code to yellow.
According to Rector Wilco Hazeleger, lectures and exams are supposed to go on as usual under Code Yellow. However, the university has realised that "many students and staff depend on public transport to get to the university. Considering no buses are running in the province of Utrecht in the morning, we do not want to ask people to come to the university. Looking to give our students and staff some clarity and peace of mind, we have decided that there will be no on-campus classes the entire day, and all exams will be cancelled as well."
The university is also closing several educational buildings today, namely Janskerkhof 15a, Israƫlslaan, Educatorium, the Marinus Ruppert Building and Daltonlaan 500.
