UU classes to go ahead despite nationwide public transport strike

In the event of public transport strikes, classes at Utrecht University (UU) will continue as usual, in line with the university's policy. 

How classes will be organised on 9 September may vary by degree programme. The university advises students to check Brightspace to see whether their lectures will be held online or arranged differently.

If there is a compulsory attendance requirement, it will not apply to students who are unable to attend. Students may cite the strike as the reason for their absence.

Exams and other assessments will also go ahead in accordance with UU policy. Students cannot cite the strike as a reason for missing them. However, as the strike is taking place in the first week of the academic year, this arrangement is unlikely to apply in many cases.

Staff may work from home in consultation with their manager, provided their duties allow for this.

Strike against cuts to social security
The strike affects all public transport across the country: trains, metros, buses and trams. The strike has been called in response to the government’s plans to cut unemployment benefits and the WIA, the benefit for people with long-term illnesses. In addition to the public transport strike, the FNV trade union is organising a strike for dockworkers on 4 September and another one for civil servants on 8 September for the same reason.
