The University Board Tuesday grudgingly approved the building ofa new university library. A few weeks ago the library turned out tocost 45 million guilders more than the budget of just over 100million. Rector Voorma promised the board the mistake would not berepeated in future developments. A second opinion will be consultedon the calculations made in the preparatory phase and used infixing a procedure for developments.

Fire safety

A former residential home in Overvecht the so called TitusBrandsmahuis is Utrecht City Council's idea of emergencyaccommodation for ten to 15 students evicted after fireinspections. Landlords are more frequently evicting because of thestringent fire regulations applicable to houses with more than fivetenants. The municipality has yet to keep its promise to providetemporary housing for the group and the USF student union has onceagain called for rapid provisions for evicted students. CouncilmanM. van Kleef promised last Friday that the municipality, the USFand the SSH housing association will jointly inspect the TitusBrandsmahuis before the summer.

Salary

The University of Toronto has decided to pay the rector's wife asalary because, as a university spokesman put it, "being therector's wife is a highly representative job." Mary Birgeneau willhave to always accompany her husband at his official engagementsand also receive guests into her home. This will now make her95,000 guilders a year. On the salary list, her job appears as"ambassador of the university."

Papal satellite

Pope John Paul II met students last Saturday. The pope was liveon TV in Rome and satellite links took him to four other countries.From the church of St. Servaas in Maastricht, the Netherlands,students and the Bishop of Roermond Wierts recited the rosary alongwith Rome.
