Honorary Orca member
Mesa Cosa founder Marius Buiting passed away
Marius Buiting studied Medicine and Law in Utrecht. In 1977, he became a member of the student rowing association Orca. He served as a competitive rower, a coach and a chair. The Orca Support Fund, which has guaranteed the financial support of top rowers in Utrecht for decades, was his idea.
After his studies, he remained close to the Utrecht rowing scene. In the mid-1990s, he contributed to renovating De Driewerf, the home of the Utrecht rowing associations. Orca and Triton each got a canteen at the time. Buiting has been a Member of Merit at Triton ever since. Later, he committed himself to the construction of a competition course for Utrecht-based rowers in the Rijnenburg district. It is yet to be built.
Orca published an obituary on its website, announcing that all members would train wearing a black armband until Buiting's funeral, September 30. They have also placed a condolence book in the canteen. A memorial service will be held in two weeks.
Networker
Buiting was also one of the founders of the sports foundation Mesa Cosa, which has been providing sports for students in Utrecht since 1991. He also served as the foundation's chair.
The establishment of Mesa Cosa ignited the construction of the current Olympos sports centre, according to the current Mesa Cosa board. The large meeting and conference room at the sports centre, which opened its doors in 1998, is named after Buiting.
Both Orca and Mesa Cosa praise Buiting as a "networker" and "inspiration" with great contributions to Utrecht student sports.
Buiting was also active outside the realm of student sports. He was a member of the Provincial Council of Utrecht, on behalf of political party CDA.
As an organisational consultant, he mainly worked in the field of quality assurance in the healthcare sector. Since 2011, he has been serving as the director of the Dutch Association of Healthcare Supervisors (NVTZ). Marius Buiting was 64 years old.
