Due to excessive pressure
Number of members of student associations continues to decline
Student associations in the Netherlands have welcomed around 8,100 new members this academic year. That's a couple of hundred fewer than last year, when they counted 8,330 freshers and in 2023, when they welcomed 8,500 freshers. These numbers were revealed by the National Chamber of Associations (LKvV), which asks its 49 member associations for these numbers each year.
Politics is preventing students from enjoying their college life to the fullest, writes LKvV president Jochem Hilckmann in a press release. According to him, students feel pressured to graduate quickly. There is an enormous burden on their mental health and personal development.’
He also believes that the housing shortage is hitting students hard. Their deteriorating financial situation and mounting student debt are also causing fewer students to opt for a year of student council work, voluntary internships, or membership in sports, study, or student associations.
LKvV calls on the new House of Representatives and the outgoing cabinet to 'tackle the huge housing shortage, reduce financial pressure and create space for a fulfilling student life.’
