According to a report published by De Gelderlander, in 2017 Han van Krieken made remarks to a female colleague that were considered as "sexually intimidating" by an external committee. After the woman's complaint was declared valid, the rector was given a warning but the university kept quiet about the incident. Now, six years later, the news is coming to light in the newspaper.

Radboud's magazine Vox reports that Van Krieken has stepped down with immediate effect, instead of doing so on October 17, \when Radboud University celebrates its centenary. “I am aware that the situation stands in the way of the centenary celebrations”, he writes on the university website.

For the same reason, Van Krieken is also giving up the interim chairmanship of the umbrella organisation of Dutch universities, Universities of the Netherlands (UNL), which has been looking for a new chair since the departure of Pieter Duisenberg.
