The university urges visitors to bring enough drinking water. The tea and coffee from the vending machines should not be consumed, either. Washing your hands with tap water after using the toilet is still possible.

Bacteria known as enterococci were found in a storage facility belonging to the water company Vitens. The risk is limited for healthy individuals, but people with compromised immune systems may be at risk of infection.

The residents of Utrecht and the surrounding areas are advised not to drink tap water without boiling it for three minutes first. According to several media outlets, many people have rushed to supermarkets to buy bottled water.

Vitens does not know how long Utrecht residents will have to boil their water. They are expected to provide an update on this case by Tuesday, November 4, at the latest.
