Van der Velden was in the final phase of her studies, according to the obituary on UU's website. Despite her illness, she still had the ambition to study as much as possible, according to the Veterinary Sciences programme. “It touches us deeply that she was no longer able to carry out these plans.”

The website of the Dutch Rugby Association reports that Van der Velden returned last summer from a stay in Canada, where she studied and played rugby. National coach Sylke Haverkorn says: "She was very sweet and she was always connected to the people around her."

There is a condolence register in the Androclus building in the Utrecht Science Park and, as per protocol, study association DSK has suspended all activities for the time being.
