The bycicle shed had to be closed immediately last Friday. Bicycle owners were given until 10:00 pm to retrieve their bicycles, but more than a thousand people were not able to do that. Formally, these people have to pay for all the extra days their bikes will be kept, as the shed is only free for the first 24 hours. However, NS, which operates the shed, says they will be lenient with the owners in question. It is just not clear how.

Alderman Dennis de Vries told RTV Utrecht on Monday that the shed had to be closed all of a sudden because an inspection revealed hairline cracks in the concrete. This was part of an investigation that followed leaks and water damage. De Vries says there is no immediate danger, but a structural investigation will be carried out as a precaution and no one will be allowed to enter the shed until the study is completed. “We are talking to a structural expert about the possibility of removing the bicycles. As soon as we have a solution for this, we will announce it on the municipality's website and social media."

Due to the closure, there are fewer parking spaces available for bicycles on Jaarbeursplein. The municipality has set up a pop-up bicycle shed on the square and recommends cyclists use other sheds in the area. However, the pop-up bicycle shed can only operate until the month because of an event that will take place at the square. The municipality is considering reopening the bicycle shed on Westplein, which was closed just last month.
