It costs energy to do things just because you think you should
‘Have a conversation with yourself about your CV’

A word from this week's guest editor-in-chief, Henk Kummeling:
This week marks the departure of Rector Henk Kummeling, so DUB invited him to be a guest editor-in-chief for a week. He suggested several themes, and DUB's editors delved into them. Kummeling explains his reasoning for suggesting an article about CV building:
'This video comes from roughly the same source as Wednesday's story: the observation that failure does not seem to be an option for the current generation of students, even though we learn so much from our mistakes. A side effect is that we sometimes see real CV builders at the university: students who pile up all kinds of extracurricular activities because they think this will make their CV 'look good', not necessarily because they enjoy those activities or are inspired by them.
I am convinced that it is more important to do things you enjoy, things that give you energy, than to ‘build’ your CV with activities you don't enjoy but feel that you have to take. If you follow your heart, you will also have a happier life in the end (I know that from experience).
It is interesting and educational to hear how the students in the video perceive this question. I completely agree with the advice given by Rutger, the career coach: "Don't look too much at what others are doing. Only as a source of inspiration.’
