TivoliVredenburg

This is the first time Pieces of Tomorrow has a night dedicated to Schubert, whose eighth symphony has never been finished. Nobody really knows why. He left it deep inside a drawer and the piece was only discovered approximately forty years after his death. One of his old students then had the idea of playing it for an audience. A shudder went through the hall at the dark first bars, "as if the late composer was there", a critic wrote at the time. In the end, Schubert's eighth symphony became one of his most famous works even though he never intended for it to see the light of day.
