Win tickets for the anniversary concert of the Utrecht Student Choir and Orchestra

USKOconcertjuni

USKO is turning 80 in 2025, and this special anniversary will be celebrated in style with a concert featuring works from the Romantic period. USKO was founded in 1945, shortly after the end of the Second World War, as an accessible ensemble for all Utrecht students interested in singing and making music together.

It remains so to this day! The choir will open the concert with a selection of French and Scandinavian a cappella works by Saint-Saëns, Debussy and Peterson-Berger. These compositions are based on poems that celebrate themes of earthly beauty, such as love, nature and everyday life.

The orchestra will perform Mendelssohn's famous Violin Concerto alongside soloist Coraline Groen, a violinist at the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra.

Finally, the choir and orchestra will perform César Franck's dramatic Rédemption. In this apocalyptic “Poème Symphonique”, the intoxication of worldly pleasures in the a cappella works is abruptly contrasted with the moral and spiritual crisis in which modern humanity finds himself. The work describes the course of human history before and after the birth of Jesus. Angelic choirs interpret the voice of divine will, which repeatedly attempts to reach humanity to offer salvation. However, earthly temptation and desire lead humanity further and further away from God, and it descends into war.
