Win tickets for Vox Luminis at Festival Oude Muziek
This edition of the festival honours Cristóbal de Morales, the emperor of Iberian polyphony. Born in Seville around 1500, he made history by combining the glorious French-Flemish counterpoint with elements from Spanish traditional repertoires.
With the Officium Defunctorum and the five-part Missa Pro Defunctis, Morales set milestones in the genre of funeral music. Editions and copies can be found all over Europe and even the New World followed the trend: his funeral mass is said to have graced the commemoration ceremonies for Emperor Charles V in Mexico in 1599. This majestic diptych will be performed by Vox Luminis.
Vox Luminis is a soloist ensemble founded in 2004 by Lionel Meunier at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague. The ensemble focuses on vocal music from the sixteenth to the eighteenth century, and also collaborates with instrumentalists. Vox Luminis has now recorded thirteen albums, including a recording of Schütz’s Musikalische Exequien, and a CD entitled English Royal Funeral Music, featuring music by Purcell and others.
