Two weeks ago, the Trump administration made it clear that it would stop providing billions in subsidies to Harvard if the prestigious university did not change its policy. The White House will only continue to pay if it can interfere in the selection process for students, staff and researchers at the university. All diversity measures at the university must be terminated.

Harvard refused to give up its independence and filed a lawsuit against the decision. Pending the ruling, the board did decide on Monday to change the name of the university's DEI department to Community and Campus Life.

Sherri Ann Charleston, Harvard's chief diversity officer, said that the university should bring people together based on their backgrounds and perspectives, not because they belong to a particular population group. Charleston's position has also been renamed: she is now chief community and campus life officer.

Harvard also promises to amend its policies in response to two critical internal reports on anti-Semitism and Islamophobia on campus. According to Harvard President Alan Garber, everyone should feel at home at the university.
