Rankings: UU is number 1 and number 5 in the Netherlands
UU is ranked 68th in the ranking of the Center for World University Rankings (CWUR), making it the best university in the Netherlands. Leiden is number 79, the University of Amsterdam 83, and Rotterdam ranks 92nd. The other Dutch universities did not make it to the top 100.
Since 2012, CWUR publishes a ranking that measures both education and research. They use public data: recognition and awards of academic staff and alumni; the number of alumni managing a top international company; numbers of publications and patents; and citations of both of these, according to the ranking page of Utrecht University.
QS ranking
Delft University of Technology and the University of Amsterdam are still the only two Dutch universities in the top 100 of the World University Ranking or QS ranking. Most other universities have dropped down on the list.
After years of rising, Delft drops back a bit in the QS ranking to position 57, while the University of Amsterdam slightly climbs again: from 64 to 61. Of the other 11 Dutch universities, 7 are losing ground. Utrecht University drops one place compared to last year, and goes from place 120 to 121.
The compilers of the QS Ranking, or World University Ranking, look at scores for research quality (citations and peer review), the staff-student ratio, and the proportion of international academic staff and students. For 40 percent, the ranking is based on reputation: the opinions of more than 100,000 experts from higher education and research. In addition, almost 50,000 employers were asked which universities deliver the most 'competent, innovative and effective graduates'. They determine 10 percent of the score.
Global Top 3
The two ranking organisations measure different values but agree on the top 3 of best universities in the world. Both have a top 3 with Harvard, the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and Stanford. While Harvard leads the list of the CWUR, MIT leads the QS ranking.
