Do students and employees use the green and red signs?
Cycling with the flow or going for a less crowded route?
How to alleviate the huge bike traffic jams in Utrecht, making sure cyclists are better distributed among the city's many cycle paths? Most people cycle from Central Station straight to Utrecht Science Park, even though they would be unperturbed if they took Ledig Erf and Gansstraat instead.
To find an answer to this question, the platform U-Forward proposed a challenge to organisations in the city. The one with the best idea would get 25,000 euros to implement it. The winner was Flosocial, an agency owned by Floor Bouwmeester and Friso van Booij, who both teach at the Utrecht University of the Arts (HKU). Titled Utrechtse Olifantenpaadjes (Utrecht's Elephant Paths), it consists of signs that indicate which routes are crowded and which ones are not.
The municipality carried out a similar campaign in 2017. At that time, students were encouraged to use the cycle path on Herenroute during the introduction week (UIT).
