The Faculty of Humanities is in deep financial trouble: if nothing gets done, it will be 23 million short of its needs in the next three years. To address the situation, the faculty is scrapping or revamping six of its degree programmes and reducing the so-called "undesignated" hours of 48 temporary teachers. UU Vice-President Margot van der Starre announced in Monday's meeting with the University Council that both the board and the faculty still hope that the austerity measures can be implemented without any forced layoffs.

Van der Starre explained that the faculty can expect to receive a sum from the university this year. ‘We will not give the 9 million euros all at once. We will look at what they need each year.’ 2027 will be the last year they can be financially supported.

The University Council reacted cautiously before reminding the board that it has the right of approval regarding amounts bigger than 3 million euros in one go or 1 million or more annually for at least 3 years. Van der Starre promised that the University Council would be sent the covenant.
