Marjorie van Elven

Marjorie van Elven coordinates DUB's English page. Born in Brazil and fluent in English, Portuguese, Dutch and French, she has been working as a journalist and copywriter for 15 years. She moved to Utrecht in 2012 to pursue a Master's in Gender Studies at UU and has been living there ever since. At DUB, she covers the internationalisation of Dutch higher education, diversity and inclusion.

Mooi initiatief, en hopelijk levert de crowdfunding nog extra op om daadwerkelijk de ontwikkeling door te zetten!

Tegelijk ook pijnlijk duidelijk hoe ontzettend belangrijk het is om tegelijk ook te werken aan jezelf, en hoe we als samenleving onze kinderen opvoeden. Hoe we onze zonen grootbrengen als mannen die vrouwen respecteren, en niet als gebruiksvoorwerp zien. Hoe we onze dochters meegeven dat grenzen aangeven je niet minder geliefd maakt (ik ben zóveel medevrouwen tegen gekomen die zichzelf wegstrepen omwille van bijv. de lieve vrede, zelf vooral een plek durven innemen, staan voor wie ze zijn...)

En tegelijkertijd zit ik ook te denken aan de in- en intrieste situatie met Lisa: zij was nota bene met de politie aan het bellen terwijl ze onderweg was, omdat ze zich niet veilig voelde. Dat de politie/centralist live getuige was van het drama dat zich aan het afspelen was. Ik hoop dat er bij het doorontwikkelen van deze app ook goed gekeken wordt naar verschillende scenario's. Dus: wanneer is een appje/belletje van een bekende genoeg om uit een awkward Tinderdate uit te komen, of 'samen' naar huis te fietsen, en wanneer is er serieus stront aan de knikker en moet er popo aan te pas komen, zonder tijdverlies en verdere escalatie? Dat wordt nog een uitdagend vraagstuk, denk ik.

Al-Ruwaishan, A.M.S. (Abdullah):

Thank you for your article and for inviting a response. I'd like to push back on two points you made.

First, you frame the protests as a call to solve "intractable, unsolvable world affairs." This is disingenuous, as the protestors have clear, actionable demands for our university and the Dutch government: to cut ties with and stop supporting apartheid and genocide, which does not require any calculus, just the bare minimum of morals and principles. Even if the boycotts do not end the killing, at least institutions and governments are not supporting it.

Second, your comparison of the conflict to the end of WWII and the use of a 50:1 casualty ratio is flawed. This is not a war between two equal sides that has reached a stalemate; it is a genocide backed by the full military, diplomatic, and economic might of the West against a native population in a clear effort to make them leave. It is clear from Israeli actions and statements that ethnic cleansing is the final goal. Otherwise, why would they be taking the actions they are in the West Bank, where Hamas is not in power? If the end goal is ethnic cleansing, does your technical toolkit or critical, rational, or quantitative thinking have an answer for how many losses are enough? If Israel continues to destroy everything in Palestine, not just Gaza, when do you believe Palestinians should "call it quits" or "cut their losses"?

Presenting this as a numbers game is crass and immoral. It shows an attempt to muddy the waters and mislead readers. There is no logic or calculus to conflict when the goal is the removal and destruction of a people.
