First, you frame the protests as a call to solve "intractable, unsolvable world affairs." This is disingenuous, as the protestors have clear, actionable demands for our university and the Dutch government: to cut ties with and stop supporting apartheid and genocide, which does not require any calculus, just the bare minimum of morals and principles. Even if the boycotts do not end the killing, at least institutions and governments are not supporting it.
Second, your comparison of the conflict to the end of WWII and the use of a 50:1 casualty ratio is flawed. This is not a war between two equal sides that has reached a stalemate; it is a genocide backed by the full military, diplomatic, and economic might of the West against a native population in a clear effort to make them leave. It is clear from Israeli actions and statements that ethnic cleansing is the final goal. Otherwise, why would they be taking the actions they are in the West Bank, where Hamas is not in power? If the end goal is ethnic cleansing, does your technical toolkit or critical, rational, or quantitative thinking have an answer for how many losses are enough? If Israel continues to destroy everything in Palestine, not just Gaza, when do you believe Palestinians should "call it quits" or "cut their losses"?
Presenting this as a numbers game is crass and immoral. It shows an attempt to muddy the waters and mislead readers. There is no logic or calculus to conflict when the goal is the removal and destruction of a people.
Krachtig artikel! Ik ben nu nog student, heb een bestuursjaar gedaan en doe daarnaast activisme en maatschappelijk werk in mijn vrije tijd. Het zou erg fijn zijn als de universiteit mij meer volledig als persoon zou erkennen en waarderen en niet alleen de nadruk zou leggen op cijfers.
